Safety Tips and Storage Tricks
When out on the road, make sure your four inch ratchet straps stay in working order, and stop use if the webbing or mechanism is compromised in any way.
- Inspect all ratchets and webbings before every use
- Look for fraying, holes, or wear
- Look for burn marks, which can be caused by friction, and can cause damage to your straps or your load
- Store them out of direct sunlight, as UV can break down the webbing
- Store them in a dry location to prevent damage from mold and mildew
- Keep them wrapped up and organized with boxes, bags or bands
Types of Hook Ends
Four-inch straps are heavy duty players. Here are the ends you can expect to find on these transporting staples:
- J-Hooks, or wire hooks, are used on one end of a ratchet strap to tightly grip the anchor point.
- Flat Hooks are low profile and anchor to the rub rail of a trailer or other tie down straps.
- Chain and Grab Hooks have a Grade 70 chain, and a hook that is specifically designed to fit over one link for a tight connection.
