Road Trip Essentials

With the holiday season upon us, many people are packing up to travel to see family or take a much needed vacation. This season can get stressful but packing up your vehicle shouldn’t be! The Discount Ramps team has compiled a handy list of five essential road trip items to make your next trip hassle-free.

First Aid Kit

It’s always a good idea to have a first aid kit on hand in your car in case of emergency. Most stores sell pre-packaged car first aid kits, however you can easily DIY with an old pencil case! Band-Aids, hand sanitizer, pain relievers, antibiotic ointment, and an ice pack are the most recommended products. It’s also a good idea to have a box of wet wipes and paper towels on hand. For winter travel, having a space blanket or hand warmers in your car is a good idea to keep warm while waiting for help.

A Cooler

Bringing your own snacks and drinks is much cheaper than stopping and buying food at gas stations and restaurants for each meal. A quality cooler keeps your snacks fresh and your drinks cold. If you stay in a hotel, you can refill your cooler with hotel ice.

Rooftop Cargo Box or Bag

No one likes to be squeezed together in the back of a car for long periods of time, and if you start infringing on passengers’ space, it’s only a matter of time until a mutiny forms. Rather than stuff the interior of your car, invest in a quality rooftop cargo box or bag to significantly increase the amount of cargo your vehicle can hold. For help picking which cargo carrier is best for your requirements, our cargo carrier guide can help you make an informed decision.

Pet Barriers

No family trip is complete without your pet! A sturdy pet barrier can keep your dog safely confined to the backseat or trunk of your vehicle, eliminating distracted driving. Most pet barriers are adjustable, providing a custom fit to your vehicle. Check out our post, How to Keep Your Dog Safe in the Car, to find more helpful tips for keeping Fido safe.

Audio Books

Jamming out on the open road is great, but for long road trips, it’s nice to listen to a book. Audio books can spark interesting discussions and break up the monotony of music. Audible is a popular service, but if you don’t want to pay for a subscription you can go to the library and rent audio books.

Car Phone Mount & Charger

Keep your phone in reach for easy GPS directions with a car phone mount and charger. Available in nearly every store, there are a number of options to choose from. We recommend one that can pivot for easy mounting and viewing.

Roadside Assistance Programs

Offering 24/7 help all year long, these programs are invaluable in case of in emergency. There are multiple programs available through each agency, and coverage can range from changing a tire to towing a car, even helping if you get locked out. Depending on which provider you choose, the coverage may even expand internationally into Canada and Mexico.

Safe Travels!

With proper planning and a few convenient car accessories, your next road trip will be an enjoyable experience for the whole family. As always, obey all traffic laws and be sure to buckle up! Whether driving across the country or just a few hours away, stay safe and have fun this holiday travel season!
