Road Trip Essentials
Taking a scenic roadtrip down the highway

If you’re planning a road trip this summer, make it a top priority to create a travel environment that prioritizes comfort and minimizes stress for all passengers and driver. In addition to personal belongings, here are several things you can prepare for in order to thoroughly enjoy your experience.

Add legroom with a rooftop or hitch-mounted cargo carrier

Instantly provide your passengers with more legroom by freeing up cabin space. Secure luggage, gear and other in-transit non-essentials on the roof or hitch of your vehicle with a rooftop cargo carrier, rooftop cargo box, or hitch-mounted cargo carrier. A quality carrier will last for years, and be well worth the investment as you stretch out in the back seat.

Avoid the munchies with a stocked cooler

Bringing your own snacks and drinks is much cheaper than stopping and buying food at gas stations and restaurants for each meal. A quality cooler keeps your snacks fresh and your drinks cold. If you stay in a hotel, you can refill your cooler with hotel ice.

Keep a first aid kit on hand for minor injuries

It’s always a good idea to have a first aid kit on hand in your car in case of emergency. Most stores sell pre-packaged car first aid kits, however you can easily DIY with an old pencil case! Band-Aids, hand sanitizer, pain relievers, antibiotic ointment, and an ice pack are the most recommended products. It’s also a good idea to have a box of wet wipes and paper towels on hand. For winter travel, having a space blanket or hand warmers in your car is a good idea to keep warm while waiting for help.

Pre-download or rent audio books

Jamming out on the open road is great, but for long road trips, it’s nice to listen to a book. Audio books can spark interesting discussions and break up the monotony of music. Audible is a popular service, but if you don’t want to pay for a subscription you can go to the library and rent audio books.

Don’t forget a car phone mount & charger

Keep your phone in reach for easy GPS directions with a car phone mount and charger. Available in nearly every store, there are a number of options to choose from. We recommend one that can pivot for easy mounting and viewing.

Think about roadside assistance membership

Finally, starting a membership with a roadside assistance service, like AAA, OnStar, and Better World Club can be incredibly helpful when traveling cross country. With different tiers and membership options, these services work with local auto shops to provide quick, local assistance for a variety of car troubles including: getting locked out, changing a tire, running out of gas, to a full tow in case of breakdowns. Depending on which provider you choose, the coverage may even expand internationally into Canada and Mexico.

Safe Travels! With proper planning and a few convenient car accessories, your next road trip will be an enjoyable experience for the whole family. As always, obey all traffic laws and be sure to buckle up! Whether driving across the country or just a few hours away, stay safe and have fun.
