How to Store Your Bike in Your Garage or Apartment
Posted on: April 3rd, 2021

It’s always a good idea to keep your bike stored in a secure location. For people who have garage space available, that’s an ideal location. For people in apartments without garages, you’ll want to find a space somewhere in your unit you can dedicate to storing your bike. This ensures greater security and dramatically reduces the risk of theft or vandalism.
Of course, actually finding a spot to store your bike is easier said than done. Floor space can be at a premium in a crowded garage or small apartment, meaning you’ll need to get creative with the storage solutions you employ.
Here’s a quick look at some of the best strategies you can use for storing your bike.

Hang it from the ceiling
This is one of the simplest and most common solutions to bicycle storage. If you don’t have a whole lot of space on the floor, you may as well look to the ceiling! For porches and small garages, a ceiling-mounted bicycle hoist gets your bike up and off the ground, preserving precious floor space for other items that aren’t so easily hung. If you are storing your bike inside your living space, you can easily put hooks up in a laundry room, closet or even in your bedroom ceiling if you wish. Some people hang curtains or other items to try to conceal bikes in their living spaces, but that’s certainly not a necessity.
Just make sure you’ve properly mounted the hooks in the ceiling or joists so the weight of the bike doesn’t pull the hooks out of the ceiling.

Hang it on the wall
You can also hang your bike on the wall if you wish using a variety of hooks or hanging storage features. You can take a more utilitarian approach to hanging it on the wall with simple hooks and stands designed for bare garage walls or utility rooms, or you can get fancy bike docks that you use to hang your bike in your living space in a much more aesthetically pleasing manner. It can resemble 3D art in some circumstances. Some of these fancier docks will cost more money and require a bit more installation time and effort, but it can be worth it to store your bike in a way that actually looks good in your living space.
In some cases, you might be able to find floor-to-ceiling racks you can mount to your wall that allow you to store multiple bikes vertically, making even more use out of the space you have available. This is an especially ideal option for garages.

Look for mobile storage
If you frequently move things around in your garage or storage space, you might appreciate a storage option that both spares you some floor space and also makes it easier for you to shift items around. There are vertical mobile storage racks on the market that hang bikes vertically from their rims to save space, but also have casters so you can quickly and easily move racks of bikes around to get at other items you need to access. These racks accommodate adult and child bikes of all sizes.

Shove it in a corner
When all else fails, just slide your bike out of sight as well as you can. This can be easier said than done in cramped spaces, but if you have to keep your bike in your apartment, you might consider sliding it behind a large bookshelf, entertainment center, dresser or high-backed sofa. Just make sure you have enough clearance to be able to wheel the bike in and out.
Bicycle storage can be tricky when space is at a premium, but rest assured, there are plenty of options available to you to help you make the most of the space you do have so you can keep your bike safe and secure!
