Celebrating Truck Drivers' Contribution to America
National Truck Driver Appreciation Week (NTDAW), which runs from September 11th through September 17th, is a time to recognize all the professional truck drivers for their hard work and commitment. Millions of hardworking men and women put in long hours to ensure we get our goods safely and on time. The U.S. economy heavily relies on the truck driving industry, with trucks delivering over 10 billion tons of various commodities, or 1.3 trillion dollars of revenue, per year. Without the hard work and dedication of our truck drivers, we wouldn’t have many of the conveniences we’ve become accustomed to in our daily lives. In honor of NTDAW, we have a list of interesting facts you may not know about the trucking industry:
- Approximately 2/3 of all domestic freight transported in the United States is carried by a truck1
- A big rig can carry as much as 40-tons of products per trip2
- The types of goods most commonly transported via truck are food, clothing, furniture and electrical machinery3
- The trucking industry makes up about 5% of America’s GDP4
- One out of every 14 jobs in the United States is created or directly affected by the trucking industry5
- There are about 3.5 million truck drivers in the United States6
- Over the next decade the trucking industry is expected to grow by about 20%7
Trucking is one of the few professions that can claim to be the backbone of the American economy. Without the dedicated drivers delivering our necessary goods and products, commerce would grind to a halt. So, if you see a truck driver this week, or anytime for that matter, stop and say thank you!
